About meAs a baby, I would sit quietly and pay attention when my mom read books to me. As a child, one of my favorite places was the library. As a teenager, I read books to escape teen trauma. As a young adult, I went to the University of Arizona and majored in English Literature and Creative Writing. As an adult, I read some part of some book every single day. Reading is one aspect of my life that has never changed.

I do have a list of the few things that are more essential to me than reading: God and my faith, my wonderful husband Mike, my adorable daughter Aubrey (one year old!!), my lovable and crazy family, my zany friends.

My beautiful baby girl has recently taken me out of the classroom, where I was a teacher for three years, and placed me back in the house. I am a happy stay at home mom, squeezing in as much writing and reading as I can during nap times.

Currently, I have a few book projects that I would like to finish some day.

1) Read Greek and Roman mythology from different sources, Metamorphosis, Greek tragedies, Homer, and other assorted similar items.

2) Read all of the Grimm and Andersen fairy tales, folktales from around the world, Lang's fairy book series, and as many fairy tale re-tellings as I can find.

3) Read all of my unfinished college books.

4) Read Arthurian lore, hitting all the major works,the background sources that contributed to these cannon texts, and the modern day versions that I find compelling.

About my libraryI'm an avid reader, and love to dip my fingers into just about any genre, author, style, or country (there are a few exceptions).

My mood dictates what I choose next - do I want a light read, something magical and fantastic, or do I want to sink my teeth into some solid literary piece or a classic? If it's raining, I have a craving for mysteries. My daughter and I love to read board books, and I personally like children stories to lighten my day.

I have a library that reflects my tastes, and I love my sprawling, unpredictable, bibliophile hobby.

My husband was in Tucson about 30 years ago! He was in Arizona with work and went to the Grand Canyon for the weekend!! Cinderella Skeleton is one of the few cinderella variants that my 7 year old son will read! No fairy princesses for him...

Thanks for the friend request -- hope you don't mind if I friend you in return! We do have some quite similar interests beyond the Virago Modern Classics. Since you seem to like YA fiction and fairy tale retellings, I can heartily recommend the book I just finished, A Countess Below Stairs by Eva Ibbotson. It's basically a Cinderella story about a Russian emigre who has to flee the revolution and takes a job as a maid in an English country house. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Hello again! You should keep a tab on the Virago group's "Duplicate Copies" thread. One great thing about this group is that the members are happy to send (usually paying the postage, too) duplicate copies of books from their libraries to those who would like to give them a new home. I've received half a dozen or more books this way, from as far away as Australia! Yesterday, I sent a book from my own library to the Philippines. I'm sure, knowing the group, people will warmly embrace the cause of a stay-at-home mom with a baby and a tight book budget!

I recently delivered a paper to a local women's club titled "Out-of-Body Experiences: A Man Reading Women's Fiction" (online here). I talk about being a classicist drawn to the "Classics" in the title, and about being a stay-at-home Dad drawn to the domesticity of many of the novels. The first Virago I read as E.M. Delafield's The Way Things Are. There's a copy of it (a classic green Virago Modern Classic) down in my local used bookstore. I'd be happy to send it to you to get your collection started, if you'd like to leave your mailing address in a private message on my profile.

Hello, Nicole, and welcome to the Virago Modern Classics group! It's a fabulous group! If you're anything like the rest of us, it will lead to an ever-increasing pile of books to read! We have a few other things in common besides the six books our libraries share: I was a stay-at-home parent for many years, and I am interested in all things Latin and Greek (in fact, I'm a college classics professor at the moment). Again, welcome to the VMC group--I hope you'll feel free to join our discussions--and enjoy those precious nap times with a book! I remember those days well!

Cindy Ella The Western Cowgirl is a great retelling of Cinderella. I wrote a paper in grad school comparing re-tellings of Cinderella and that one was my favorite.
