hi luna - I just joined lt a few days ago and I was reading the threads about mooching which I'd never heard of but which sounds like a great idea and by chance I saw your name and it made me smile.

years ago when I drove an open sports car in england if you drove past the same make of car you would flash your headlights at each other.

please don't feel you have to reply - this message is just the equivalent of a flash of my headlights - from one lunar to a luna (I'm lunarcheck on a chess site plasticbishop too). and we do have one book in common!

Hi Jenny, just to say I haven't forgotten you, but the parcel of books that will (hopefully) be winging it's way to you after this weekend wasn't liked by the postal scales at work and it can be quite difficult to get to a post office during the week (disadvantage of working near a village vs advantage of nice green area in which to eat my lunch...). Looks like you've got lots of stuff to work your way through in the meantime at least!

Hi Luna - the ARC of the Forest of Hands and Teeth has arrived. Unfortunately it is not so much a book... It is actually 320 A4 pages bound together (uncorrected proof)...

If you are still interested let me know asap, as I have a friend going to the UK next week and she said she might have room in her bag for it. Otherwise it will be the normal long slow boat ride.

Lunacat- remember me? I angeled 3 books for you, but only 2 have arrived (The River Between Us and The Fall). The 3rd, The Blood of Flowers has not been accepted since I requested it on August 28th. I think the only reason the book was added back into her inventory is that the previous moocher cancelled after no response for 2 months. If it's okay with you, can I go ahead and post the 2 that I have for you and just wait and see if the other owner comes back to the land of the living?

I'm very happy to! Diana Wynne Jones is one of my all time favourite authors - mostly for the comfort/cosy factor, so it really pleases me when other people enjoy her too (ditto Neil Gaiman to a lesser extent). I like lending my favourites. Provided, of course, that they don't get lost or destroyed, but I trust you (and the DWJ books are all pretty battered anyway!) Let me know if you want to borrow any and I'll post/deliver you it/them.

Mark and I have been discussing the possibility of another group read in November and want your input. We have narrowed it down to two books at this point. "The People of the Book" by Geraldine Brooks and "The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield. So chat it up with friends or us and let us know if you are up for it and what you think. Probably the same plan as with "Pillars of the Earth" which seemed to work out perfectly for almost all of us.
Think it over and give one of us a shout.

I can hardly type, I am so excited! I guess I should rein it in until it has arrived, but I still can't believe you (we) got Inkdeath. Thanks so much, and I am so glad you can read it too! I assume you have read the other two? It isn't even available here in paperback yet, and it will be so expensive that I baulk at paying so much.

But I have just realised how thick it is! :( I don't think the other two are THAT thick??! So...would you like to wait for another mooch from me, to post with it and help with points vs costs? I'm sure one will come up - more and more of my wish-listed books are only available from members who won't send to me. *sigh* I don't know what I would do without our thread! Well, my TBR mountain range would be a lot smaller, is what - heee! I was watching and watching last night (actually you stopped me fretting very quickly) as I was sure a local would snag it first.

Let me know; and enjoy reading it.

I noticed you have added a Lindskold; I am beginning to find her books too - they look interesting, IMHO. Have you read any yet? And I didn't realise how many books we shared! Huh - how not? We have the same good taste in books, methinks!!! LOL!!!

I know what you mean - I wanted to be earlier really and am a bit miffed :-( If I can find a babysitter to cover the gap - or if Rup gets off earlier for some reason - I may be able to get there sooner.

Have saved your number - why don't you suss out how it's looking and text me when you've decided whether to hang out outside or go in? I think doors open at 7 but if the queue is building up I guess you may want to be relatively near the front.

Btw, just noticed you've put Dora Damage on your wishlist - want me to bring my copy along on Monday? I was planning to list it on Read It Swap It as I won't re-read it.

hello! Re Margaret Atwood: I've checked the train times from Cambridge and they go about every 10 mins at that time of the evening, so I can meet pretty much whenever. Topping website says 7 for 7.30, but I'm not sure if that means 'doors open' at 7 (and hence we ought to get there a bit earlier to make sure we're not too far back...). Will ask them tomorrow and see what they say.

Thanks for keeping me posted regarding your grandmother. The emotional roller coaster is indeed very difficult. I went through the same thing in the process when my beloved grand mother was transitioning to the next life. I vividly remember crying very hard at her bedside, believing it was her last day, and then lo and behold the next day she would rally.

The hospice folk told me this was VERY "normal" at the end stages. While it was physically and emotionally draining, I learned the valuable lesson that life calls for life. I thought of this Dylan Thomas poem many times.

I remembered a thread where your mum explained she wasn't being rude to you...cos she was your mum, or she was allowed to be rude to you, cos she was your mum; or such! And I remember laughing a lot... so I was confused until I remembered that - aggh! That sounds terrible...

I haven't forgotten about my mooching "Speak" for you, but the book's owner may not be sending it. She's a brand new member, who accepted mooches and put them all on indefinite delay. I emailed her, getting a vague promise of two weeks to a month and have emailed her again, it having been a month, only to get the same vague time span and excuses. I have no problem waiting in the hopes she is actually planning to send those books out, but you might want to put the book back on your wishlist and mooching it if you can (I would be happy to angel anything you find)--and only when you get the book, will I cancel the first mooch.

Hi! Beyond the Deepwoods actually came in. I was nearly on the verge of asking you if you wanted to cancel, but apparently the moocher forgot to mark it sent a few weeks ago. The packaging wasn't quite secure enough - there's a slightly squished-in section of pages and something in transit seems to have stabbed at the spine, but it still manages to look surprisingly Very Good.

I'll throw it up on the site for you in a minute.

I just received a response from the moocher who has Beyond the Deepwoods, and life's apparently been too hectic for them to get to the post office. Just saw your comment in the litjoy thread in the Green Dragon, glad to find another fan of the book. It was recommended to me here on LT by Booksloth and I really loved it.

I would have loved a sequel set about 20-30 years later where the police were digging up the garden and finding lots of skeletons and a court case went through what had happened to them.

One that is just as chilling although very different is Monster Love by Carol Topolski. It's a terrible subject but a fascinating book.

I just spotted your comment on the 'Clunkers' thread, where I was getting very upset to see that someone had nominated Shantaram. I'm a little over half way through right now and I can't remember when any book has grabbed me so firmly by the throat. I was just so glad to see I'm not the only person to have fallen in love with this amazing book! As I've argued on another thread, I don't really see how anything written in the first person can be anything but sef-indulgent. Whether it's fiction or a/biog it's still all about someone yelling 'Listen to me! This is MY story!' As the author himself says that the connections with his own life are fairly loose, I think it's a mistake to try and read the book as anything other than a great piece of 'truth-inspired' fiction. It's good to know I'm not alone here! And you're another Brit - which is always a good reason to wave and say Hi!

So what did you think of Lives of the Monster Dogs (I saw it on your Bookmooch list and assume you've read it)? I thought it was seriously weird. Also rather depressing, the way it came out - there were options for (reasonably) happy endings, but the author took none of them. But I'm very glad I read it. Opinion?

Thank you so much for responding and giving me a summary of your book. No, it doesn't seem like it is that book at all, but that's one more possibility I can scratch off my list, so it's valuable all the same.

You mentioned a book called "The Enchanted Forest"--I have been looking for a book of that name I read in the library as a child in the 50's. There are a surprising number of books by that name, but rarely summaries of the stories of the older books. I remember a brother and sister being lost in a forest of ill repute, and enslaved by an (ogre)? Children were dressed in rags and picked some sort of vegetation. Is there any chance the book you recall is this one?
