But it's the context of the whole cloud that places in relief individual tags, no? It likely wouldn't occur to me to search for tag "forests" or "uncles" or "living abroad" or "World of Darkness" etc. but noticing them in your tag cloud, I'm drawn to click on them.

I've done a bit of looking on Amazon for other promising books, but they all seem to have their own flaws. This is the one that I'm currently most inclined to purchase: http://www.amazon.com/New-Arabic-Grammar..., but I think it's more a grammar than a typical textbook.
On a completely different note, I've had The Gatekeepers sitting in my TBR pile for a while now. I'm glad to see that you rated it highly.

Did you mean Robin McKinley's 'The Hero and the Crown'? I have indeed read it but that and 'The Blue Sword' were borrowed from the library years ago. More recently I stumbled across a copy of Blue Sword and bought it retrospectively, but not yet Hero. Super books. The Blue Sword has one of the most beguiling beginnings to any fantasy novel, I think. Also, being a horsewoman myself, I really appreciated that Robin McKinley clearly knows her horses too. Nothing more irritating than horsy stuff written by people who don't know...

Overall, if you have no expectations, and if you generally like silly, it's diverting - good for a long flight or DMV queue. Some aspects are goofy, others are downright genius.
My biggest complaint was that the binding was too tight - cheap glue? - so the spine broke on day 1. A whole section split out. Still debating whether to return it for another copy.

Flipping through and sampling a few pages, doesn't ring any bells (which actually doesn't mean much - I can be 30-40 pages in before something clicks - my spouse says its because I don't actually read the books - I just devour them in huge chunks without bothering to chew or taste, just bite and swallow).
So, why is it on my bookshelf? - you see the Library Book Sale has these "Bag Days" (Day 1 - brown paper grocery bag = $5, Day 2 until done - brown paper grocery bag = $2)...and on that day I am likely to wander through just tossing things in if they ring any bells: I recognize the author, I recognize the title, the subject "fits" my tastes, the cover is interesting, it is old (Why do I love to own books that are 100+ years old? - if I had a psychiatrist you could ask them.)
So I probably just picked it up because I recognized the author as one of "those" authors. The theory is that if I want to get some "culture" (whatever that is) or if someone says - "You consider yourself a literate person and you have never read anything by blank!?!" I can correct the problem overnight.
So, should I read Main Street? (To find out if I would like Free Air)

Well, I really liked the idea of the tattoos being demons and coming alive at night to help the woman. That seemed interesting to me. I also really liked the Zenna Henderson books, which I see you also have. I think I liked that fact that they were about regular people with some extraordinary capabilities. I tend to lose interest if there are a lot of strange creatures - I think I'm always looking for a book about "the human experience". Hard to do with sci-fi, I know...

I honestly think it's just the weight and width of Eldest. In paperback it is a really thick book, the hardcover was massive as it was so no suprise the paperback was this big. Eragon is more reasonable. lol I've been planning to buy a lifetime membership to LT come this christmas as a lot of my books in my RL library are not listed because I hit the free threshold. I think geophile told me its 25 dollars canadian for the membership. I just have to clear some space on my card to do it. I may be getting a new job in the next few months which means a pay increase as well as an hour increase. I'll be ok after that if it works out.

to get a life time account I have to have the money first and right now I'm pretty tapped for cash. I may ask for that from my sister for christmas though so who knows.
Street Magic reserve ends tonight at 7:36 pm. Thanks for grabbing it for me.
So I went to the post office to check the price on sending both books and they wanted $20.00 with tax to send them in a package together so I'm going to try something different. I'm going to wrap the books in plastic with some cardboard and then in brown parcil paper and see if that works out better. I've never sent a book that way before. So I'll probably be shipping one out tomorrow and the other in two weeks. Is there a preference as to which one you get first?

Thanks for picking up those books for me, I always try to keep the paper backs on hand so I don't ruin my hard covers or for that matter my dust jackets. However I always end up giving my paperbacks away when someone becomes intrested in the series. hehe I love to encourage reading. anywho thanks again I should be sending either Eragon or Eldest today. *hugs of thanks*

I do get alot of ARCs. I have no idea why I get so many from LT Early Readers Program. Everyone else I know have only gotten like 1 or 2 a year. I guess I am just lucky that way.
I get alot of my ARCs from Shelf Awareness as well.
I have been to the Baen library too.
I just love books and cant stop getting new ones. It is a sickness really. Even reading 100+ books a year doesn't begin to put a dent into the books I have and have not read.
But, with a 2 year old and a baby due any day now, I am sure that my reading will slow down even more. So sad.

Well, infiniteletters, I'm a little jealous, but I've come to terms with it. (I've seen the amount of postage on packages for a while now.)
What really makes me see red, however, are days like about a week ago, when I sent packages at the same time to Calgary (similiar to sending from Buffalo to Denver), and to Greece. The package to Greece was cheaper!
Within the country, we have all these "bells and whistles" like tracking numbers, etc. and we can't opt out of the fancy stuff that we don't need, so it's really expensive.
On the bright side, I've met several really nice people, because if we can, we arrange to exchange in person, rather than going through the post office.

I'm going to flesh out my "favorites" collection just to solicit recommendations from suggestors (like you)!
The one I didn't write down was what you recommended from Charles Stross - I wasn't terminally impressed with Singularity Sky - many good ideas not fully fleshed out (like Heinlein's For Us the Living).
Spousal Unit and I just read Altered Carbon and Broken Angels by Richard K. Morgan - very impressed with the first, meh on the second.

I love how you've set up your library and took a few pointers from your organizational schemes. I really liked how you noted which books were collections, anthologies, etc. and what you could find in each. It may seem a bit obvious now except I had never thought of it before I glanced through your library.

I'm amused/peeved though that I've been gently lusting after a service for several years that they discontinued in 2007!!

I was starting to think I might have to curtail my mooching for a bit with so many books coming into the house lately. Lucky for me someone mooched 11 books from me today! Now I can tell my husband the next 11 mooches I make don't count!

Well, I would be but unfortunately you have caught me in a tagging error. I apparently failed to update my BookMooch tags on this one when it got mooched. I could email the guy who mooched it from me (he is pretty active on BM) and ask about the contents (but that doesn't actually get you the book if they are different - unless he re-lists it).

On a different matter: I just mooched a book for an LTer who needed a US to Australia angel. This is my first shot at "angel"ing - I am under the impression that you do this fairly frequently and I am curious as to how you make sure that you keep all your "angel" transactions straight. (I "friended" them on BM and sent an e-mail stating that I had mooched a book for them that they had requested on LT. I also wrote the info on an index card. They sent me a lovely little email which I will leave in my inbox until the transaction is DONE.)
I just don't want to lose track of who is expecting what if I get into this. My plan was to relist the book with a reserve for THEM - but will this exacerbate the "I got an email that my wishlisted book was available but it was reserved for someone else when I checked." problem? Should I just ask for their address and request that they smooch me the points so as not to disappoint the others? (Why do I think of these nuances AFTER I am already committed...?)

Yes! I am interested in this (from a layperson's not an educator's perspective). Sorry, it took a few days for me to get back to you - part of the time was spent trying to figure out how you knew that this would be of interest to me...(Did I post something in a thread? Can you tell by the books that I own? Was this comment actually intended for someone else and just HAPPENED to also apply to me?)
This is a topic that often comes up when I am having a discussion with my spouse - one will be explaining something to the other and we will discover that the "explainer" is explaining things in a way that makes the most sense to THEM - but the "explainee" thinks about things differently and so has to translate into a system that makes the most sense for them - very hard to do when you are learning something new.
An example: we were discussing odds/ratios/percentages (as it applies to poker hands - but that doesn't matter). My spouse is a "numbers" person and thinks in terms of "odds" where as I am a visual person and think in terms of "percent" (which is easy for me to visualize). So they would be explaining that something had a "4 to 1" chance of winning and I have to convert that to "1 in 5" and then to "20%" which I can visualise as "XXX-OOO-OOO-OOO-OOO" (think of a bar graph - the X is red the O is blue)...once we discovered that I was spending all this effort converting and would miss what they were ACTUALLY talking about we came up with the rule that the person who UNDERSTANDS the thing has to "pre-convert" to the learners best concept - things go alot smoother now...

It's a little strange in some ways, in that it contains hundreds of hand-me-down books from our ancestral families. Most would be antiquarian by today's standards. Stay tuned.

I think one of the Bulfinch books has some kind of printing error--some pages might be missing--but I couldn't find it when I looked, so I can't guarantee their condition. Pasta, Pizza and Risotto is in perfect condition because I never used it (it was a gift). It's the biggest one, hardcover, over 450 pages. Mapping Human History is a medium-sized h/c, and I think The Potao is a p/b.
How the West Was Worn is fairly slim.
What do you think of BookMooch? When I looked at it, it seemed that everyone was passing around mass-market paperbacks. I don't have many of those, and I hardly ever buy them these days. I also found the site hard to navigate.

The neighbor is renting some in limbo (I hope forever) land across from us. The pond has about 4 to 5 inches of ice on it and can support several horses on it at one time. Until this last spate of cold weather and some snow they were able to break it by themselves but it's just too thick for them now. I use a huge pry bar. It's iron and about 5 feet long and must weigh at least 20 or more pounds. It's got a nice wedge shaped edge that really breaks the ice. The neighbor is preggie and doesn't need the worry.

But I was thinking more like a place where you could go to the librarian and say okay, I need the scent of durian, or moon dust, or 1974 shiraz, and the librarian could get it for you from the stacks. :D Or you could check out the novel-length scent-stories "A Paris Day in Springtime, 1894" or "Murder In A Gentleman's Club" or, you know, "Hot Lesbian Shower Sex", and then take it home and spend an evening immersed in it.
That would be the best library ever.

When I was a kid, our neighbor's daughter, an ex nun, came to stay with her mother for about a year. This would have been late 1960s. She got a job teaching at the Catholic school across the street from us. At that time, the Church was running short of nuns, though the Dominican sisters still ran the school and handled catechism.
I was quite obsessed with her for awhile, sorta like Scout and Boo Radley. I remember she often wore yellow, which my mother said not everyone could carry off. I was forbidden to discuss the convent with her. My mother told not even to say the word "nun" around her.
So I made up all sorts of fevered adolescent backstories for her, imagined what her life might have been like working with the Dominicans, and invented myriad adventures for her wearing her yellow sweater to which there was always a happy ending.

I looked at the website for the book and reviews for it on Amazon. I see you don't own it, so you must have seen it somewhere. I'd love to see it. I'll try to interlibrary loan it from CSU San Diego, one of the sister universities in our system. The pictures sound awesome...but, of course, the topic is dismal and alarming.
I'd like to get a copy of the book to show to our discussion group.

I did read that anthology, and that's one of the stories I liked, I think. As I recall, I liked half the stories and wasn't all that fond of the rest. But my favorite McKinley book is Sunshine, no question.

Re the strange order - right now much of my library is stored in boxes, with minimal ordering (result of several moves and my own laziness). So, I'd grab a box, bring it to the computer, scan it in, take it back to the library (aka the extra bedroom that, with shelves, might someday be worthy of the name "library"). Now that my booklist is uncapped, I'll be scanning the rest, which might fill in some of the gaps. (But no promises - it really is eclectic!)

I made the distinction so that if they came up with a way to handle short stories I could identify which items contained as-yet-uncatalogued works. I don't know if you can see it but in the "comments" for any work with the 'omnibus' tag I write "Includes: list of works" and in the "comments" for any work with the 'inclusion' tag I write "Included In: name of omnibus work" - so I have my own internal cross-reference.
