About meThe Grumpy Vegan is Kim W. Stallwood and my personal Web site is www.grumpyvegan.com. I am a consultant and independent scholar and author. I am a veteran advocate for animals working in leadership positions for some of the world’s foremost animal rights organizations in the United Kingdom and United States. In addition to being a consultant to organizations in the UK and US, I am the European Director of the Animals and Society Institute ( www.animalsandsociety.org ), an independent research and educational organization that advances the status of animals in public policy and promotes the study of human-animal relationships.

I collaborate with the politically-oriented artist, Sue Coe ( www.gseart.com/coe.html ), on various projects which address our treatment of animals. For example, the annual graphic novel anthology, Blab! No. 18, published recently featured "An Elephant Never Forgets." It tells the true story of Topsy, an elephant electrocuted by Thomas Edison in 1903. This project is currently in development for publication as a book and an exhibit at the Galerie St. Etienne in New York in 2008.

I edited two anthologies of articles that were originally published in "The Animals' Agenda" magazine, which I also edited. Both books are published by the redoubtable Lantern Books.

The first is "Speaking Out for Animals." In the introduction, Jane Goodall writes, "Kim W. Stallwood, in gathering together stories of determination and courage, stories emphasizing the power of individual action, has produced a book that will have an important impact on those who read it. The voices of the animal advocates speak from every page: some quietly, some with resonant shouts, together encouraging all who care about animal suffering to work even harder to effect change."

I recommend this anthology as a relatively easy read and a way to learn about animal issues through these heroic individuals.

The second anthology is "A Primer on Animal Rights." The book contains work by some of the leading authorities on animal protection issues, including: Jim Mason, Marc Bekoff, Mike Markarian, Betsy Swart, Norm Phelps, Wayne Pacelle, Pat Derby, Gene Bauston, Karen Davis, Richard Schwartz, Don Barnes, and many others. All articles are up-to-date and full of important facts. This anthology brings together the best of the investigative reporting articles that I published in The Animals' Agenda.

My paper, "Utopian Visions and Pragmatic Politics: Challenging the Foundations of Speciesism and Misothery," was published in "Animal Rights The Changing Debate" and the article, "The Animal Rights Movement Must Be Politically Pragmatic" from "The Animals' Agenda" was included in the 1996 edition of "Animal Rights Opposing Viewpoints."

About my libraryThe Kim W. Stallwood Animal Rights Archive is a collection that I have built since I became a vegetarian in 1974 (I have been a vegan since 1976). The collection includes books, journals, magazines, newsletters, artefacts, audio visual materials and public educational materials (flyers, leaflets, posters, etc.).
