About meGrad student in philosophy. Should be working on my dissertation, but am probably doing something else instead.

About my libraryIn process of tagging and cleaning up my library. This might take a while or forever.

If I hate a book it will probably not be in my library, so although I will be using the 1 star rating, this does not mean that it indicates the worst book ever or something. Ratings: 1 = Did not enjoy reading it, but it's not bad enough, and is perhaps too important, to expel from my library. 1 1/2 = "Oh yeah, I read that . . . it was okay." 2 = I am glad I read it, thought it was decent, but probably will not return to it. 2 1/2 = Good. It has its problems but don't we all? 3 = Very good, but does not quite achieve greatness. 3 1/2 = Greatness I guess. 4 = Better than great, and I think about these books often. 4 1/2 = Nearly perfect. 5 = Has re-wired my brain and I have not been the same since. Basically anything 3 or 3 1/2 and up is really really good and I would recommend them without hesitation.

There is lots of stuff I have read, but really have no idea how to rate. I have not read Dune in years. And who am I to rate Aristotle's Metaphysics? The ratio of books ranked 5 is also a bit high, but that is because a really great book, like Lolita, still stands out after a few years, while The Real Life of Sebastian Knight, which did not make too much of an impression on me, will need to be reread before I rank it.

Please help.

Would you help me by quoting Elkin's The Franchiser narrative context where's the following:

"The dishwasher has returned his steak, saying it is too medium" [NY 1976, p.316]

Thanks
we share about half of the books ive put on here. i see you have earlier Disch; his later Minnesota novels are stunning.
We share 396 books. That's insane! Nothing like grad school to make one's library become bloated and decadent. Finished grad school a few years ago, now I'm going through all my books. Looks like you got some cool stuff.
Hello!
Nice library! and you've been more efficient in cataloguing it… I'm quite new in here and think it's usefull and funny, even more when, as i did, you just moved to a city where books doesn't mean anything. Hat's the theme of that dissertation you so often leave on the side so you say in your profile)?
I saw that in the cataloguing process, se'll discover more books in common.
I hope to have occasion to discuss sometimes on certain of those.
Yours,
Patrick
I am about to start looking for good copies of the Decline and Fall. It will be long overdue that i read each of the volumes. I also want a good copy of the Decline of the West. Wish me luck.
Oh, and we both recently added Koestler's Acts of Creation.
We share 68 books, some of which are a bit more obscure, or odd to be together in one library. I'll definitely peruse the rest of your library for things I may not know.
Oops, I meant to hit 'add to interesting libraries'. Nice image.
Love your rating system. Why didn't I think of this? (Probably because I'm not a philosophy grad student.)
Cheers!
We share 118 Books; you have quite an extensive collection.

I can't tell if I would want to meet you or avoid you at all cost!
Roob's Alchemy and Mysticism is a beautiful book, Jung's Mysterium Coniunctionis is a life time study, Hyperion is the best space opera ever, the Three Stigmata is definitive PKD and Zinn keeps me slightly left of center. I recommend Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan. Happy Holidays.
May the Lord have mercy on your soul!
