About meI am a book lover, avid reader, news junkie, addicted to my Nintendo DS and I enjoy traveling where I try to be like Twoflower (The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic) but the reality is closer to Carolyn Blue (Crime Brulee, Truffled Feathers, etc…) but without any dead bodies. I always take my towel with me (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) for its practical and psychological value.

And at all times I strive to live my life with all the dignity and gusto as befits a Queen Tammy (The Sweet Potato Queens’ Book of Love).

About my libraryEclectic but not a hodge podge…I read that somewhere…ok, maybe a bit of a hodge podge.

I have a lot of sci fi/fantasy, biographies, travel books, philosophy, mysteries, science and silly chick lit. Comedy is a common theme in most of my favorite books.

I seldom enter a book store without buying a book. I like to buy local books when I travel. I picked up my first Terry Pratchett book in London, discovered the wonderful Sister Fidelma Celtic mysteries in Galway, and thoroughly enjoyed the native legends by Velma Wallis when in Anchorage.

bon jour a toi, aussi. Ca va?

No chance of my forgetting you. Bummer that Spokane wouldn't work for you.

later, K
Thanks so much for the info about the book club Carol! I've seen all the different book club selections they have there and have been reticent to try one - not knowing anything about them. I'm looking for work and it makes it hard to commit to buying books and such but I will definitely check that one out.

I read your post in the thread you linked to and I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. It's such a difficult thing to do. But I wish you all the best and hope for all good things for you.

Take care,
Alicia
I'm glad my review of John Medina's book helped. As you said, he's "got it going" on a lot of channels: science, entertainment, humanity, effectiveness, humility, grandness. I'm glad folks like that exist in the world, and that I get a chance to share in their vision.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed them, very kind of you to say so.
Thank you for joining my thread
As soon as I figure it out I'll let you know. No secret handshake, that I remember, any way.

Thanks, again.

Karen
Inviting some people to the thread I just started. Thought it might be of interest to you.

yes, I think I can make it a bit early so I can do dinner. My experience of the book seems very parallel to your description of your experience.

Looking forward to hearing from the others. Visual images of NYC crumbling are kind of fun.
CarolO, I am about 2/3 of the way through Travel as a Political Act. I'll keep an eye on your discussion group and add my thoughts after I finish it up. So far I'm enjoying it immensely. Thanks!
I have not started Travel as a Political Act yet, in the middle of Night Work now. But will be reading it soon. Thanks for the invite to the discussion thread.
I am so glad you enjoyed the book. It is one of my favorites. He has another book called [River Horse] where he journeys by boat across country through rivers and the Great Lakes. I did not like it as much but it was a pretty good read.
I would love to join you all this month, but unfortunately I have a board meeting I need to attend that night... and this isn't one I can miss. Controversy, tempers, and issues, oh my!
I'm hoping to join you next month!
Hi there,
Thanks for the welcome in the travel group. I'm glad that I could pass on to you my interest in Pico Iyer, he is a wonderful and thoughtful travel writer. If you do get around to reading any of his books I would be interested to know what you think!
I'm sorry we couldn't attend the book club meeting. Thanks for inviting us. We're dealing with some family health issues right now. Please let us know about future meetings, though! Thanks again.
That's a fantastic idea. Bring something by Derek Walcott (or your favorite Caribbean author)!
Sounds like a great idea but I've moved to the Caribbean and won't be able to attend. Good luck!
Carol,

Thanks so much for your kind words. It's always rewarding to know that someone reads the reviews. I've been slack in entering them for my reading over the past 6 months or so. I must get back to it.

I can appreciate your thoughts on Hitchhiker's Guide. I enjoyed it but I think it's like many movies that you hear how wonderful they are. When you get around to seeing (in this case, reading) them, it's near impossible to match the hype.

Take care and happy reading! I hope to read your review of Brain Rules sometime soon.

Adam
Excellent - hope you enjoy the book as much as I did!
